Canton is a city in and the county seat of Cherokee County, Georgia, United States. As of the 2010 census, the city had a population of 22,958, up from 7,147 at the 2000 census. Canton is located at the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains in the northwestern part of Cherokee County, with its southern border following the Etowah River. It is one of the largest cities in Metro Atlanta.

Canton was first settled in 1833 and was named after Canton, Ohio. The city was chartered in 1834 and soon became an industrial center for textile mills. The city grew rapidly in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, reaching a peak population of over 10,000 in 1920. The city’s fortunes declined in the mid-20th century as the textile industry declined. The city was revitalized in the late 20th and early 21st centuries with the development of Lake Allatoona and the construction of the Georgia National Fairgrounds and Agricenter.

Canton is located in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains in northwestern Cherokee County, with its southern border following the Etowah River. The city is situated about 45 miles north of Atlanta and about 9 miles south of the Appalachian Trail. Canton is located in the Georgia Piedmont and has a humid subtropical climate. The average January temperature is 45.5 degrees Fahrenheit and the average July temperature is 79.5 degrees Fahrenheit.
