Covington is a city in Newton County, Georgia, United States. It is the county seat and has a population of 13,697 as of the 2010 census. Covington is located at the junction of Interstate 20 (I-20) and State Route 36. It is 28 miles (45 km) east of Atlanta and is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area.
The city was founded in 1823 as the seat of the newly created Newton County. Covington was incorporated as a city in 1854. The city grew rapidly in the late 19th century and early 20th century, due in part to the establishment of a textile mill in the city in 1882.
Covington has a historic downtown district which is home to a number of antique shops and restaurants. The district is also home to the Newton County Courthouse, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The courthouse is one of the few remaining antebellum courthouses in Georgia.
Covington is also home to the Georgia Piedmont Technical College. The city is served by the Covington Municipal Airport.
