More About Griffin Real Estate

Griffin is a city in and the county seat of Spalding County, Georgia, United States. The city is part of the Atlanta metropolitan area. As of the 2010 census, the city had a population of 23,643.

Griffin was founded in 1828 and named for landowner Col. Lewis Lawrence Griffin. The city was chartered on December 20, 1851. The area was developed for cotton plantations, and many planters moved into the city. The city was the site of several gristmills and cotton gin mills before the American Civil War.

The city was captured by Union forces under Maj. Gen. William T. Sherman during the Atlanta Campaign on September 18, 1864. The city was burned by Sherman’s troops on November 15, 1864, as part of the larger Sherman’s March to the Sea. After the war, the city was rebuilt.

Griffin is home to the The National Infantry Museum, which opened in 2009. The museum is located at the site of Fort Benning, the U.S. Army infantry training base. The city is also home to Spalding Regional Medical Center, a hospital which serves the city and surrounding county.
