Jonesboro was founded in 1823 as the seat of Clayton County. The city was named for Judge Augustin S. Clayton. The city was originally developed as a cotton plantation, but the coming of the railroad in 1843 led to a rapid expansion of the city.
Jonesboro is located in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains, about 25 miles south of Atlanta. The city is home to a number of historical sites, including the Historic Jonesboro Courthouse, the Stately Oaks Plantation, and the Road to Tara Museum.
