{"id":159,"date":"2016-09-29T15:30:00","date_gmt":"2016-09-29T15:30:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/dev.gahomesdigest.com\/blog\/moving-checklist-8-weeks-to-a-successful-move.html"},"modified":"2023-04-28T14:38:52","modified_gmt":"2023-04-28T14:38:52","slug":"moving-checklist-8-weeks-to-a-successful-move","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/search4.homes\/moving-checklist-8-weeks-to-a-successful-move\/","title":{"rendered":"Moving Checklist &#8211; 8 Weeks To A Successful Move"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" style=\"font-size: 12px; float: left; margin-left: 20px; margin-right: 20px; margin-top: 10px; margin-bottom: 10px;\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/movingchecklist_400.jpg\" alt=\"Moving Checklist\" width=\"400\" height=\"252\" title=\"\">They say moving is one of the most stressful things a human can do. \u00a0So we thought to put together a guide to your move. \u00a0 This guide starts at 8 weeks. \u00a0So for most of the people reading that this year, that likely means you need to start this plan as soon as you <a href=\"\/selling\">list your home<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2>8 Weeks Out<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Decide to make a plan &#8211; most people simply wait until a week before they move and start packing. \u00a0That&#8217;s insane! \u00a0Come up with a plan. \u00a0That&#8217;s a bit redundant though since you&#8217;re here.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Create a move file &#8211; You can use evernote with great results or use a specific box or folder. \u00a0Specifically you want moving receipts<\/li>\n<li>Ask<a href=\"https:\/\/joshuawilsoncpa.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> your CPA<\/a> &#8211; ahead of time &#8211; which moving expenses are tax deductible.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Get estimates on moving NOW, not when you&#8217;re behind the 8 ball and need to move.<\/li>\n<li>If you get any reimbursement on for relocating, get the list of approved expenses from your employer AND start tracking those in the file you created in the above step!\u00a0<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>7 Weeks Out &#8211; already feel a little stress?<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>If you know your move date or closing date go ahead and schedule the movers<\/li>\n<li>Go to your favorite Dr., Dentist, etc and start to get referrals to where you&#8217;re moving. \u00a0This is HUGE for pediatricians!\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Do the same with Vets if you have pets<\/li>\n<li>Look at your things, what are you taking, what can you sell or give away. \u00a0Keep this in mind for moving as the moving company costs will go up the more you decide to take.<\/li>\n<li>Start to contact important clubs, subscriptions, etc. \u00a0While it may be premature at this point, you should at least add most of the items on this list to your file so you can call when you know your closing date.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>6 Weeks Out\u00a0<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Make a list of all the really big items you&#8217;ll be moving.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Plan that garage sale or donate the items you decided you weren&#8217;t taking.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Start Packing Up stuff now!\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Gather your insurance agent&#8217;s information and put it in your file<\/li>\n<li>Go to the post office and get their change of address envelope &#8211; YES, you can do this online but you won&#8217;t get the coupons.<\/li>\n<li>Double check your dental and heath contact information. \u00a0If you&#8217;re under contract and you know your closing date you may want to start to get your records.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>5 Weeks Out<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Check out Auto Insurance if you&#8217;re going to need to change<\/li>\n<li>Arrange for temporary storage if you need that as well<\/li>\n<li>Make sure you continue to pack<\/li>\n<li>Check in on the mover or make sure you have booked your mover<\/li>\n<li>Make sure you know what is insured by the mover<\/li>\n<li>Photo anything that is valuable and store that on your phone, evernote or your file.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Locate banks at your new location<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>4 Weeks Out<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Measure your appliances that you are taking<\/li>\n<li>Give away those final items that didn&#8217;t sell<\/li>\n<li>Throw away things you don&#8217;t want to take with you<\/li>\n<li>Get ready to turn off your utilities, subscriptions and services, if you&#8217;re moving out of state, go ahead and set the date usually a day or two after closing.\u00a0<\/li>\n<li>Anything that needs 30 days notice would need to happen now<\/li>\n<li>Get the kids to help out with packing and start to see their new room<\/li>\n<li>Schedule the professional packing day one or two before the move.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>3 Weeks Out<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Review your labels on your boxes (Improve if necessary)<\/li>\n<li>Get all your clothes or other items from dry cleaners and other vendors<\/li>\n<li>Make the plan for the day of the move. \u00a0Where will the kids be?
