The city’s name is derived from the Latin villa, meaning “town”, and the Spanish rico, meaning “rich”. Villa Rica was established as a gold-mining town in 1826, and by 1830 it had become one of the largest towns in Georgia, with a population of over 1,000.
In 1833, Villa Rica was the site of a bloody battle in the Cherokee War. The Battle of Villa Rica took place on October 9, 1833, and was one of the largest battles of the war.
